“Newave Japan” which introduces music life of attention young artist who is responsible for Japan’s future music scene. At this time, we interviewed Shogaizer / Dream Pop Band “yuragi” is from Shiga Prefecture. They released their first album in August and have performed with many foreign bands touring in Japan. We asked them about the current stance of the band and the artists who have influenced their various musical directions.

“Create space with music” – what is the style of yuragi?

―yuragi, as a shoegazer band, has presented “bedside music” as their concept. Where did this concept come from?

mirako:

Shoegazer music is noisy but gentle, right? I thought it would be interesting to make music that is noisy yet snuggly for bedtime. That’s why we decided to make “bedside music” as our concept and also why we are in this genre. Recently, however, we stopped caring too much about the concept.

―Why did you stop caring?

インタビュイー画像

mirako:

We started to have our own color even without a concept. I consider myself different from those bands who are called shoegazers because I haven’t listened to shoegazer music as much as they would. We bring in songs that are totally different from shoegazer music and chew on them to make our own sounds. As we kept making music like that, “yuragi’s style” was born.

ーIs mirako the member who mainly produces the music?

インタビュイー画像

mirako:

Yes. I create small parts on my own and bring them to the studio where everyone adds more sounds.

―Is there any artist whom you currently refer to when producing music?

インタビュイー画像

kantaro:

We don’t really refer to any artist when making big frames. Recently however, Sigur Rós often comes up when we are working out the details.

mirako:

Mystery Jets and Bonobo too, when we made albums. Aphex Twin in terms of the tone.

―We get the impression that yuragi is conscious of the band’s presence overseas just as the artists you just mentioned who are all foreigners.

yoshida:

Uploading “Bedside” on SoundCloud was the start. We got a lot of unexpected reactions from abroad.

mirako:

Those who comment on our YouTube videos are mostly foreigners. When we were featured on the “Asian Shoegaze” channel on YouTube, the reaction was great and our view count increased all of a sudden. We also got booked by foreign bands when they performed in Japan. Consequently, we became more aware of our presence overseas.

―I see.

mirako:

We also have many opportunities to play with Japanese bands singing in Japanese so I would like to think our position as in a way convenient because we can casually go wherever we want.

The band consists of members with a variety of musical backgrounds. They are currently active and based in Kansai. Their strength is their delicate yet roaring sound - inspired by shoegazer music, dream pop, and noise music - along with clear vocals.
